How to Use This Template

Click “Add policy” to build your register entry by entry. For each policy, record the name, category, owner, who approved it, version number, review frequency, and when it was last reviewed. The template calculates your next review date and flags anything overdue or due within 90 days.

Use the category filter and status filter to focus on specific policy groups or find problems quickly. Export the complete register as a CSV spreadsheet at any time.

What Goes in a Policy Register

A policy register is a central record of every policy your organisation holds. It answers five questions an inspector, auditor, or governing body will ask: what policies do you have, who owns them, when were they last reviewed, when are they next due, and who approved them.

For more on what policy management involves and why manual tracking breaks down, see our plain-English guide.

Who Needs a Policy Register

Any UK organisation subject to regulatory inspection or audit benefits from a structured register. Schools (Ofsted), GP practices (CQC), charities (Charity Commission), and councils (internal/external audit) all need to demonstrate that policies are current and governed.

This tool provides general guidance for UK organisations. It is not legal advice. Always check the specific requirements of your regulator.
